There's not much that I enjoy more than music. So when I was asked to create a poster for the Middle Bass Island Music Festival, needless to say I was pleased.
Here's the finished design and illustration:
The legendary Lake Erie Islands
This is the 2nd year for the music festival which is takes place on the Lake Erie island of Middle Bass.
The event is held at the recently renovated space that once was the the historic Lonz Winery. Vineyards have been on the island as far back as the 1860s. George Lonz owned and operated the winery for most of the 20th Century until his death in 1969.
Along with the winery, Lonz, who was called Ohio's Wine King, added wine cellars and the rather unique tower that greets boaters as they come into dock. The winery was a summer party place for folks escaping to the islands.
Tragedy struck in 2000 when a crowded deck at the winery collapsed, killing one person and injuring 75. The winery was immediately closed and sat unused for over ten years.
The State of Ohio bought the property, turned the building into an open-air patio, built a beautiful pavilion and created a museum in the cellars. The area is now Middle Bass Island State Park which officially opened in 2017.
About the event and poster.
During the time when the winery was closed, Middle Bass Island became more of a quiet getaway for island visitors and cottage owners. In 2017, to celebrate the opening of the park, a few of the local residents decided it was time to throw a party once again!
Below are a few photos from the 2017 music festival.
All for a good cause.
The proceeds from the music festival go to the Lake Erie Island Conservancy. Since 2000 the Conservancy has been preserving natural habitats throughout the Lake Erie Islands. Their good work not only gives islanders lovely places to walk and explore, it also benefits the plants and wildlife that make the islands their home.
Anyone who plans to be in the Put-in-Bay area on July 14, 2018 should get over to the Middle Bass Island Music Festival and support the Conservancy.
Along with the music, fantastic food and drink will be on offer:
The illustration and poster was designed to be easily modified to fit various sized spaces and media. Flyers for handouts & direct mail pieces, small posters for hanging in local shops and venues as well as larger outdoor posters will be produced. The concept is also being used to promote the music festival online and in social media.
There are several bass names in the Lake Erie islands. This year there is a bass player (or two) as well!
